The Helping Hand That Is Your OWN!!!
We are a Texas-based non-profit organization. Our mission is to help individuals and organizations with limited resources become self-sufficient. We do this by working with communities and organizations at the grassroots level, finding out what they need and helping connect them to the resources they need to enrich their lives. About BUFTX

BUFTX is an administrative, programmatic and fiscally responsible institution. Since 1987 we have served as a major anchor for supporting and developing funding initiatives that facilitate the positive growth and development in underserved communities. We create educational programs and provide necessary resources in underprivileged areas that spur individual and community change. We believe in smart fund allocation, and therefore, we employ minimal staff and work with volunteers and members to conduct our work.
Our Work
Our programming is focused on eight areas:
- Community Health, Preparedness & Relief
- Culture (African & African American heritage, history, fine art & storytelling)
- Youth Development
- Workforce Development/Entrepreneurship
- Technology (increasing representation of underrepresented groups, manufacturing, bridging digital divide)
- Food Security (production, processing, preserving & distribution)
- Environmental Sustainability
- Social Justice

Current Work
HAP Urban Agriculture Micro-grant

Past Work
Vulnerable to Vibrant
Vulnerable to Vibrant was a collaborative community-led project by BUFTX and the City of Houston’s Health Department to address environmental injustice in Houston’s Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens. We hosted tree plantings with Houston Wilderness, community clean-ups with the City of Houston Solid Waste Department, and provided solar workforce training to 14 community members in partnership with Green Thumb Academy and South Union CDC. Hear Janelle’s story below about the solar training she received.
